Free Tutorial: Crocheting Cosmetic Pads

Did you know that more than 9 million cleansing wipes are used and discarded every day? That's a significant amount of waste!

What could be more fitting than crocheting your own cosmetic pads?

By Sandra Sonnenburg

The art of crocheting is experiencing a resurgence, taking us beyond the potholders and chain stitch snakes taught by mothers, grandmothers, or craft teachers. Today, it shares the stage with incredible creations from crochet designers like Nomad Stitches, Lillabjorncrochet, and_Oh_mami_crochet

Is there a catch?

Crocheting is wonderfully simple to learn and incredibly enjoyable! Unlike knitting, all you need is a single needle with a hook at the front, making it far more accessible for beginners to the world of handicrafts.

For those who haven't ventured into needle and thread projects yet, we have an ideal introductory and beginner project for you—a sustainable endeavour that doubles as a thoughtful gift or token.

Making Your Own Cosmetic Pads

Did you know that over 9 million cleansing wipes are used and discarded daily? That's an alarming amount of waste!

At Pascuali, our commitment to sustainability extends from our office practices to our supply chain. We steer clear of plastic, minimize waste, and strive for closed supply chains in our yarn production. Our aim is to impact the environment and Mother Nature as minimally as possible.

So, what could be more fitting than crocheting your own cosmetic pads? It's easy, quick, perfect for using up yarn leftovers, and makes a great gift for loved ones. But be careful: it can be addictive!

Tips for Yarn Selection

All our yarns are not only suitable for knitting but also for crocheting. Since our yarns are natural fibres, they retain the self-cleaning properties of the fibre, making them not ideal for machine washing. However, cosmetic pads need regular washing for hygiene. This means the fibre must withstand machine washing at least 86°F  (30°C), or preferably 140°F (60°C)

without damage. Therefore, cotton or a cotton blend is best for cosmetic pads because it is gentle on the skin and suitable for vegans. From our range, we recommend the smooth Cumbria, the slightly sturdier Re-Jeans, or the soft Suave for your cosmetic pads. We've crocheted with these three yarns for our pads and found them to work well. The following instructions are written for the Cumbria version, but you can easily use the other two yarns as well. Feel free to try them all one by one!

Magic Ring
With your working yarn, form a loop with approx. 1.6” (4 cm) in diameter, with the thread end pointing to the left. The working thread is on top and runs to the right. Hold the crossover point in your left hand with your thumb and middle finger. Stitch into the ring from the front with the crochet hook and pick up the working yarn so that there is a small loop on the hook. Pick up the working yarn as usual and work the first double crochet stitch. The end of the yarn runs along the ring to the left. Now crochet the required number of stitches into the loop. Make sure that the stitches are crocheted around the double-threaded ring (loop and yarn end). Finally, pull the short yarn end to close the ring.

Chain stitch
For the first chain stitch, make a slip knot on your hook and pull the yarn through to create a new loop. For all following chain stitches, bring the working yarn through the loop that you have on your needle.

Slip stitch
Insert the crochet hook through the next stitch (usually the first stitch of the previous round) from the front, bring the yarn from the back to the front and pull it through both stitches on your hook.

Double crochet
Yarn over the hook, insert the hook through the next stitch from front to back and pull the yarn to the front. You have three loops on your needle. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through the first two loops on the hook. You have two loops on your needle. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.
